The Romans did not like the idea that Caesar was planning to marry an Egyptian, but Cleopatra left with four year old, Caesarion, after Caesar was stabbed to death. Later in life she had another affair but this time with Mark Antony. With Mark Antony she had twins, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene, and later a boy, Ptolemy Philadelphos. While Mark Antony was having these affairs with Cleopatra Mark Antony had a wife, Octavia, waiting in Rome. When Mark Antony finally divorced Octavia word spread that he and Cleopatra were together. Octavia's bother Octavian declared war on Cleopatra. Octavian's army defeated Antony's on September 2, 31 bce. After Octavian defeated Mark Antony, he committed suicide in 30 bce with his own sword. After Mark Antony's funeral Cleopatra's children were taken as prisoners. Cleopatra was put on display as a slave in the cities she ruled over. This was too much humiliation that she could not take. She committed suicide with an asp (a type of snake) and died on August 12, 30 bce.
Why should future students learn about this individual? Students should learn about Cleopatra because she wasn't like other girls of her time. She was a smart, well-educated women who knew what she wanted. She knew how to speak nine different languages including Egyptian. Unlike most women of her time she knew how to make decisions which would help her be a noticeable pharoh. Even though her story ended in a tragic way, Cleopatra is an interesting ancient Egyptian woman to learn about it.
